I teach in an urban, middle/ high school in Upstate New York. Our school has a 96% free lunch because most of our kids live below the poverty level. My kids come from high - poverty, high - crime neighborhoods. Most of their family's expendable cash is spent on necessities. They don't usually come to school with the basic supplies they need.
My kids are smart but often don't meet the standards because they lack the supplies that their suburban peers have.
My Project
My students have come in to my classroom everyday since September to a table with supplies in baskets. I am running out. Now, I have stubby colored pencils that are taking the place of the regular ones. The pens are long gone. My rulers are worn, in some cases you can't read the numbers on the side.
My students color code their notes and color their labs.
Most of the markers are dried out and the colored pencils short. I let my kids repair their folders or I give them new ones when theirs are too worn to patch. My scissors are very small because I used to teach younger kids.
I think new supplies lets my kids know that I expect them to finish as strong as we started. Please help me to get the bare necessities for my kids.
