This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are walking into a school where there is nothing. We have the bare necessities to go on throughout the school day. My students look around at other schools and ask why we don't have the things that other classrooms have.
My students attend a charter school where over half of the kids come from poverty and they are below their reading levels.
They're the most enthusiastic kids you will find in Louisiana. As soon as I see their bright and smiling faces get off the bus in the morning, I know that everything will be OK. They come to school everyday excited to learn something new. They hate going home because they enjoy school that much. They love to sing songs, laugh and play, but their favorite thing to do is read. My students are only in the first grade but are wise beyond their years. They enjoy life and they give me life on a daily basis.
The resources that I chose for my students are things that we need for our classroom but we don't have the money in our budget to purchase. In our classroom library we only have one shelf of books and my kids have read all of those books already. We need a variety of books because my kids love to read and that's their favorite time of the day. The math manipulatives are for math centers and are there to help reinforce the math lesson that was taught. The tennis balls were ordered to help keep our floors that were waxed nice and clean and also to prevent a lot of the noise that the chairs make when we are moving around the classroom. And last but not least, the organizational items were ordered to keep track of my students daily work and to teach them how to become better organized in school and in life.
I am a first year lead teacher so I don't have much to provide for my kids.
I look around at all my other colleagues classrooms and I am saddened that my classroom does not look that way. I cannot afford to purchase many items so this my only chance of giving my students that opportunity to feel like they are in a real classroom instead of one with the bare minimals. I would really appreciate the opportunity to be granted these items just to see the smiles on my students faces.
