My Students

My students want to explore and read banned books and do a project on why they are or are not subversive.

My students are diverse and dynamic.

We are an inner city school that focuses on Project-Based Learning. My students love to read books and are eager to learn why some books were banned or challenged. My students loved to do projects where they investigate real world issues.

My Project

I am requesting 5 copies of "Slaughterhouse-Five" and 6 copies of "The Basketball Diaries" for a banned books project. Students will work in Lit. circles to study these books and their authors. They will then investigate why some places have challenged and/or banned a particular book like "Brave New World" or "The Adventures of Huck Finn." They will then present their findings and debate whether literature is subversive or not.

Students need to see that literature has power and that by reading they can become empowered.

My students need to have a diverse range of books to pick from. The more choice/options, the more they feel they are empowered.
