Banned Titles & Best Sellers: 8 Options for Book Clubs

My students need multiple copies of these popular eight titles for a book club project we will work up to once they have built up confidence and stamina on independent reading.

My Students

My students are Boston Public school 9th graders attracted to this school for its strong academics and focus on leadership and community service. They are passionate, funny, smart, sincere, and kind. I have only just met them, but I am already inspired by their enthusiasm and wit. They come from various parts of the city, and their backgrounds are equally diverse--Cape Verdean, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Albanian, Nigerian.

Their backgrounds might vary, but like most of us, they love good stories; I am committed to putting great books in their hands this year.

Since school opened, my students have been clamoring for good book titles. Their interests range far and wide: The Fifth Wave, Hole in My Life, Bodega Dreams, The Fault in our Stars, The Assist, Twilight, Tuesdays with Morrie, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings--one student even chose War and Peace. They're excited to read because they're getting to choose what they read in my English class.

My Project

My students are starting the year choosing their own books for independent reading, but before too long I want to up the ante. If they're playing it safe reading all of one author, I want to open up the field of reading for them and get them to try something new. They will choose one of these eight books, join a "book club" of other students reading that book, and they will read together, talk about their books, make meaning from their observations and questions, write in response to the text, and build a deeper understanding of their chosen book.

I have chosen these books for their rigor and literary merit but also because their subject matter is high interest for my particular set of students.

Book clubs are a great way for my students to exercise choice and for me to nurture strong reading habits.
