Banned, But Not Silenced: Building a Bold Library

Help me give my students copies of banned books to read during Independent reading time.

My Project

In a time when books are being challenged, censored, and removed from shelves across the country, I want my students to know one thing: their stories, identities, and questions are valid—and they belong in literature. That’s why I’m requesting a collection of banned and challenged books for our classroom library, including titles that explore race, gender, sexuality, and systemic injustice.

Many of these books—Dreaming in Cuban, To Kill A Mockingbird, and Stamped —have been targeted not because they are harmful, but because they tell the truth.

These are the very stories that spark empathy, build critical thinking, and open powerful conversations among students.

My classroom is a space where students from diverse backgrounds come to learn not only how to read but how to understand the world—and themselves—more deeply. Banned books are often the ones that resonate most: they name the unspeakable, challenge the status quo, and invite students to think courageously. By funding this project, you’re not just putting books on a shelf—you’re taking a stand for freedom, for representation, and for the right of every young person to read without restriction.

Thank you for helping us build a library that defends student voice and values every story.
