Banned Book Jail Break!

Help me give my students a display of banned books to pique their interest and fight censorship

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Healy's classroom raised $421

My Project

My school nurtures the artists of tomorrow--dancers, actors and theater technicians, musicians, painters, and digital artists. We want them to explore the depth and breadth of human thought and creativity, yet in the current climate artists and writers are silenced and their work is challenged or banned.

Help our school celebrate the breadth of human thought and expression with a banned book installation--a jailbreak of challenged books.

With these materials, students and I will create a bulletin board display highlighting banned books and the freedom to read. We will also wrap frequently challenged books, like The Catcher in the Rye, Harry Potter, Beloved, and Gender Queer in brown paper and write the reasons for challenges on the cover. These books will be spread throughout the library so students encounter them as they travel the collection.

Capturing the students' attention with a bulletin board featuring books behind bars and flame iconography, and leading them to open up challenged books will pique their interest. This in turn will motivate them to read and discuss ideas. We hope to see an increase in reading, circulation, and conversation. An interactive poster will allow students to share their experience of frequently challenged books for others to read. This display supports the work of English teachers who will be celebrating Banned Books Week this fall and the AP Literature classes who will be reading The Handmaid's Tale--another frequently challenged text.

Help me build a reading, democratic-thinking culture in our library and our school.
