Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with two public schools in Chicago. One, located in the middle of one of the largest public housing projects in the city, needs a lot of help. Our students deal with many issues unfathomable to most adults. As a result, their behavior is an area that needs constant attention. However, that is only the immediate concern. It is our desire to teach our students long term goals of financial responsibility. This year-long project called "Bank on Behavior" will help connect these short and long term goals. The project will encompass the entire school, grades kindergarten through eighth grade.
"Bank on Behavior" is year-long projecct and will require numerous requests for supplies, which will be used as rewards. We are starting the process by initially requesting small items, like pens and pencils.
Through this project, students will learn the value of good behavior and how delaying gratification through economic responsibility will bestow greater rewards. The purpose of this project is to teach the value and the relationship of saving money and good behavior. The entire school will participate in the ongoing, year-long activity. Students and classes that demonstrate cooperation and good conduct will be rewarded with school money, which can then be used at the school store to purchase educational supplies and prizes. Teachers will also incorporate lessons concerning banking and investing their money, including the mechanics of compounded interest and credit, into their math and social studies curriculum. The more school money a class saves, the more precious the prize they will be able to purchase. All school staff will contribute to inspecting class conduct. Our two-pronged project will help transform our school into an improved model of discipline, simultaneously preparing our students to be financially responsible.
Student work will be showcased with their physical body and voice, as exhibited through attitude and manners. Their achievements in financial losses and gains will be displayed on charts posted monthly that track the progresses and regresses of each class. The end-of-year assembly will include special acknowledgments of the top three classes, in addition to the three most improved classes.
Our students can and will succeed, but how and when is less certain. Hopefully, by funding a small part of this project we can begin immediately and with vigor.
