Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an overcrowded school, in a city where funding has been significantly cut and continues to be cut. We cannot afford to buy additional materials that go beyond the basic textbooks. I teach in a high poverty school in which all of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are inspired to make a difference in their world when given opportunities to be part of something much larger than themselves.
My students live in a world where playing video games is the norm instead of playing outside, but learning through being active is so vital in promoting a healthy lifestyle.
My students feel good when they participate in high quality learning experiences that have a purpose. When given the opportunity to make a difference through even the smallest act of kindness, my students rise to the occasion.
My Project
My students enjoy being active in our community and helping others whenever they can. During our weekly classroom meetings, my students participate in team building activities as well as community service learning projects.
We recently discovered an incredible opportunity to help underprivileged children across the world through the UNICEF Kid Power Challenge.
This challenge requires my students to wear a fitness device to help them track the number of steps they take during the day. For every 12,000 steps my students take, UNICEF will donate one therapeutic food packet for a child in need. My students need wearable bands to participate in the UNICEF Kid Power Challenge. This challenge begins on March 1 and ends May 31. We are hoping to receive these bands in time to participate in this wonderful opportunity to make a difference.
I am excited about this wonderful partnership through UNICEF in helping to not only motivate my students to live a healthy lifestyle through exercise, but band together to make a difference through providing food to children in need.
