This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds and have a myriad of needs. 98% of students qualify for free lunch, and a lot live below the poverty line. Many have single parents who work multiple jobs, and my students either watch younger siblings or work after school to help pay the rent. Because of this, participating in private musical instruction or outside performance groups has not been an option. However, they are very creative and eager to learn. They desire to participate in extracurricular performance opportunities any chance they get.

For the majority of my students, the first time they ever perform on stage is during their high school career.

But they are no stranger to music. They bring with them the different styles and sounds of their home countries, rich histories and cultures, languages, memories, passion, dedication and excitement.

Many have moved to this country with the hope of finding a new and better life filled with opportunity. My hope is to give every student the opportunity to succeed in music and performance whenever possible.

My Project

This project is asking for a class set of various band instrument books. My students use school owned instruments, and we provide all music to the students so that everyone can participate in band, regardless of their financial situation. However, that is a very expensive undertaking for our school. As such, we often have to supplement our budget with generous donations, fundraising efforts, and projects such as this. These books will help make solo and full band performances possible for our students.

Each year, we must find new music to play, so that a student does not repeat a song from year to year.

These books contain multiple songs and would greatly expand our library for much less than the cost of purchasing each song individually. These books also contain songs at various ability levels so my beginners can find success on the first few pages, while my more advanced players will still be challenged using the ladder pages of the books. These books will help push my students farther as musicians by offering the opportunity for solo performance. Our program is not successful without donors like you! Thank you.
