Banana DNA??? We are Crazy for Science!

My students need supplies for an experiment isolating the DNA of a banana. We will need gloves, plastic tubes, bags, wooden sticks and clay.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

5th-grade students at our school are excited to learn and come to school every day ready to do their best. Unfortunately, because we are a low-income Title 1 school these students do not always have the materials and support that they need to be successful in the school setting.

Even though these students do not always have the best resources, they are never heard complaining, instead, it is much more common to hear them cheering each other on with kind words and reminding each other just how special and capable they are!

My Project

This hands-on science project will help to both inspire and unlock the students' potential to become future scientists. In this experiment, 5th-grade students will learn about DNA through extractions.

To complete this experiment students must first learn key scientific concepts like genes and traits.

We will learn that the same DNA that makes a banana become yellow and curved is what tells our body to make our hair a particular color, to give us attached earlobes and even how tall we will become. Students will be shocked when they find out that humans and bananas share 50% of the exact same DNA make up.

This experiment requires many different materials. The students must first select and peel their banana before placing it into a plastic bag and mashing it up to break down the cells in the banana. Students will then add a mixture of salt, water, and dish soap to help extract the DNA. Once this mixture has done its work, the students will use the gauze to strain the mixture and place it in their plastic tubes. Finally, they will add cold alcohol to allow the DNA to coil together and use the stirrers to physically remove it from the container.

These students can only see a future similar to the one they are currently growing up in. With this experiment all 5th-grade students will be able to picture themselves as a real scientist, unlocking their desire to seek a profession in the science industry and further their education career!
