My students need 10 copies of each of 7 various graphic novels such as the new hit series Bone, Knights of the Lunch Table, and The Hardy Boys to name a few.
Bam! Slam! Shazam! With interactive video games these days, how can books compete? By getting graphic! Graphic Novels that is. I am a reading specialist in a high poverty school with a high concentration of military students.
These days students have so much going on in their own lives and so much outside stimulation by TV and video games its hard to get them interested in books.
Until now!
We recently surveyed our fourth and fifth grade students to find out their interests related to books. We have found that graphic novels are so appealing that they motivate even the most reluctant reader. However, we do not have many of these books in our classrooms. Students are literally on a waiting list for their chance to read the book. By having several copies of each book all of our students can enjoy and discuss the books with each other. More importantly, our students won't have to "wait" to read.
We have seen the power of books, specifically graphic novels. Students who hate to read are in line to get their hands on these appealing books. By purchasing more of these books we can make an even bigger impact. Through your help we can satisfy our students' literacy appetites. Help us put excitement better than video games in the hands of our students.
