Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live around South Central Los Angeles where every day can be a challenge coming to and from school. Regardless of the neighborhood problems, all the students come to school ready to learn something new and to express themselves to the class.
Our school is a Title I school, where many of our students are English Learners and all qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
100% of the students in my classroom are English Learners, and 75% are Long-Term English Learners (LTELs) who want to reclassify this year before going into middle school.
The majority of my students either lack computers at home or internet, and doing research or finding programs to help with learning at home can be difficult. Regardless of the hardships my students don't give up.
My Project
My students are active 5th graders, but the lack of equipment prevents us from staying active with different sports. As part of LAUSD, students are mandated to do 100 minutes of physical activity a week. Many can't wait to go outside for P.E., but sometimes feel down when we don't have different equipment to play sports. Many ask me if there is a way to get more balls to play outside, but unfortunately the answer is always the same, "We can't and we only have this kickball." Although students like kickball, many don't feel the enthusiasm to always play the same sport. I want to be able to give my students more options for sports.
All these balls will give more options for students to choose different sports and be more active during P.E.
The students will be more active during P.E. There have been times when we have to skip P.E. in the morning and throughout the day they fell sluggish and sleepy all day, but with these balls they will be more awake in the morning and ready to learn since there will be more options for sports. Furthermore, we will be able to do the mandated 100 minutes of physical education. With all this new equipment, the students will be able to be more active, play sports, but more importantly, learn about team work while staying healthy.
