Ballroom Dance for Young Ladies & Gentlemen

My students need a series of ballroom dance lessons that will teach them social and dance skills while developing student self esteem.

My Students

The music plays but the girls and boys are too shy to ask one another to dance. Shy, self conscious and unfamiliar with the dance steps, the boys and girls stand along the wall and nobody is dancing. Ballroom dance lessons can build the needed self confidence so that everyone can have a good time.

My fifth grade students attend a New York City public school in one of the most diverse areas of the nation.

We are an international school community and my students are energetic exuberant learners. They speak many languages and have a deep appreciation of the arts. The families of our children look to us to provide the best possible education to ensure their childrens' success, and that includes the academic, artistic, and social dimensions of education. New York is an international city recognized for its multicultural perspectives, and our school is a microcosm of that diversity. Ballroom dance is enormously popular on television with "Dancing With the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance". We want to dance, too, but first we'll have to learn the steps and etiquette. The social etiquette of dancing, working with a partner, and learning just how to move is just the beginning, but we are sure we can do it.

My Project

Last year DonorsChoose.org donors funded our ballroom dance program and it was a huge success. The students showed how they, as young ladies and gentlemen, could discover the joy of ballroom dance with a partner. Enhanced self esteem, good manners and character development while socializing were positive aspects of this program. Students delighted to dance resulted in an invitation to perform at the 100th Anniversary of Grand Central Station in NYC. Parents were simply astonished and thrilled. What a contribution this was to the childrens' lives. Now we want to make this a school tradition. My students would love to be the next Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers, but with budget cuts eliminating many arts programs, funding for ballroom dance may be an elusive dream beyond our financial reach. We want to see jubilant faces while the students dance with their partners. There are no wallflowers in this program and the children can't wait to show their dance moves.

We think we can dance and we want to dance with our stars, but we need your help to do so.

Ballroom dance cultivates good manners, self esteem, social graces and graceful dancers. Character development is so important. We look forward to becoming the elegant partners at any social event where there is dancing, if only this project is funded. Our dancers are stepping out once that music plays, but we'll need your help to begin. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, here we come.
