Bags of Books for Building Readers

My students need a variety of books to read at home. I hope to build a classroom lending library where students can create bags of books to read independently or with friends and family members.

My Students

How lucky am I? As a primary teacher, I have the opportunity to make an early impression. I teach first grade in an urban, Title I school. We are an International Baccalaureate school developing global citizens through inquiry. My diverse classroom welcomes all types of students.

"The future of the world is in my classroom today," Ivan Welton Fitzwater.

My first graders are caring, open-minded, curious students that love learning. I hope to foster these leadership qualities in all children.

My Project

Research tells us that reading for 20 minutes each evening builds vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and oral language skills. What better way to encourage reading than with a bag of books selected by friends. I have seen students connect over books, just like adults!

These leveled books will make a difference by building a love of reading not only through choice, but by sharing books among students.

My students will work together to build at home reading bags with books from this collection. The products I have selected are at various independent levels to provide opportunities for ALL students to read.
