I am a physical education at a Title I school in a low-income neighborhood. Unfortunately, funding is not taken seriously in the state of Arizona for public education. We have no budget for purchasing PE equipment at our school.
We have to rely on tax donations and grants to purchase our PE equipment.
Despite the lack of newer equipment and not having the right equipment for a sport, these students play with enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn. For instance, I have never heard them complaining about using tennis rackets to play badminton or using hockey sticks that are too small because the longer ones are broken. They are happy just to be able to play the game and learn a new sport.
My Project
It's hard to teach badminton with tennis rackets and a volleyball net, but these kids still enjoy it. However, I would like them to use the right equipment. Most of the students have never played badminton before, so they don't know the difference. They enjoyed playing last year, but I had to explain to them that we don't have the correct net and rackets. As a result, they didn't get the true experience of playing badminton.
This year they keep asking me when we are going to play badminton again, even if we have to use tennis rackets and a volleyball net.
I told them to wait because I am trying to get the equipment so they can experience the real way to play the game. In addition to badminton, these nets can also be used for tennis (we already have the rackets!) and pickle ball. We play without nets for pickle ball. It's not as easy because we have to play on the basketball courts and just use the lines to pretend there is a net. These nets will make a huge impact for the kids. They would be excited to learn these games the way they should be played.
