My Students
Our middle school is a Title I Magnet Public School located in North Miami, Florida. Over 90% of the student population is comprised of first and second generation Haitian Americans, and 96% of students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. These statistics do not define my students, it is what makes them special. They never let their at home situation get in the way of their success as a musician.
We practice after school Monday-Thursday from 4:00PM-5:OOPM with about almost 90% attendance every practice .
That tells you how motivated and eager these Tigers are to make their band great! We are one of the few standing marching band programs left. Due to their dedication and over achievement, the band has been designated to open the Youth Fair every year. That is just one of the many accolades they have achieved.
Many of the students leave our school with great talent. Most of them are scouted by high school band directors and are accepted into some of the best music programs for high school.
My Project
I am requesting 4 new trombones. Due to being located in a socioeconomically disadvantaged area, the students can not afford to buy or rent their own instruments. These instruments will be shared among trombone players in each of my classes and also for the after school band trombone players. Although 4 instruments is not enough, it is a great help to get the kids hyped and ready to play on a full functional instrument.
We have not had a new trombone since 2008!
Due to the cost of instrument repair and not having a budget, the students have to play with dented slides and taped up spit valves. This causes intonation problems within our band. We have not let this situation stop our music program from being great.
The band must play on! With that being said, we will use these instruments in our Winter and Spring Concerts, parades, festivals, school activities and in any other way the students can display their talents. It will be a great asset to have brand new shining trombones for the kiddos to perform with!
