My Students

Taking from STEM fundamentals, when you enter into the STEM classroom you will find students exemplifying the growth mindset and a teacher with high expectations, creating a supportive environment, and lifelong learning for both the teacher and the students. Students are placed at the center of learning, taking responsible risks, and embracing experimentation and innovation. Through this program the students will begin to apply content area thinking and knowledge as opportunities through which students process and solve relevant, real-world problems and connect with the world beyond school. Having a program with genuine integration among disciplines helps to provide a connected, meaningful student learning experience.

Students will be experiencing the following:

Connections: Identifying ways in which the solutions learned in class can be applied in broader industry related applications.

Frustration: Learning to deal with failure will be a very hard lesson for some.

Fun: At the heart of this class should always be a good dose of fun. Students learn better when they are enjoying what they do.

Becoming Engineers: Having the disposition and imagination to inquire, investigate, tinker, dream, invent, and communicate with others about practical ideas. For this program to be as effective as possible students need appropriate materials.

My Project

In my Medical Detectives STEM classes, my students learn about disease agents. In learning about disease agents they learn about bacteria and the effectiveness of antibiotics. I would love for them to be able to swab the various surfaces in our school and on their persons, plate it on a Petri plate, and be able to see the growth of the bacteria in a reasonable amount of time. This opportunity will allow them to see how all of these places can harbor bacteria and further their understanding of hand washing and cleanliness. Unfortunately, at this time my students do not have the necessary equipment, an incubator, to make this happen efficiently.

I want my students to be able to participate with biomedical curriculum by being able to make connections, work through frustration, and have fun!

There is no better way to learn about the world around them, biomedical science concepts, and foundational STEM methodologies than to be fully immersed in hands-on labs and struggling through all the concepts. Help me be able to give my students this opportunity to learn in a meaningful and relevant way.
