My Students

Concepts in Science are often intangible and thereby difficult for students to grasp. To develop a deep understanding of how bacteria grow and what they look like, students need to actually collect it and grow it!

My 120 freshmen and sophomore students attend a large public high school in NYC.

They often come from less than desirable situations including highly unstable family lives, gang violence and impoverished neighborhoods. Regardless of their circumstances, students still come to school and to class prepared to learn.

My Project

In an effort to nourish my students' desire to learn, I want to offer them the most enriching and engaging activities that I can. What better way to learn about bacteria than to collect it yourself and watch it grow!? Our classroom needs a set of petri dishes with growth media and collection tools so that students can collect and grow bacteria as well as tangibly practice the scientific method.

Students thrive with hands-on activities and they tend to remember them more than simple note-taking.

By giving these students the materials they need to have an enriching learning opportunity, you are supporting them by allowing them to engage the material and retain it for when they have to meet the high standards of state tests. Please donate and support my bacterial endeavor to give my students the learning opportunity they deserve.
