Bacteria and You: How Important Is Washing Your Hands?
My students need enough agar medium to make 96 plates for growing bacteria for their experiment, inoculating loops, sterile swabs, and bacteria culture for the control.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever wondered why you have to wash your hands? Is washing your hands really effective for killing bacteria? Just how much bacteria do we get on our hands in our daily lives? What is the best way to kill bacteria on our hands? In this project, we will explore the answers to these questions!
Our small school is located in a building of other public city high schools.
The student body is very multicultural. Our students are from a disadvantaged urban population where 100% of students qualify for free lunch. Hands-on experiments are appealing to our students. During my course, students will build their critical thinking, analyzing, and problem solving skills. Students will have the opportunity to think like a scientist and conduct their very own biotechnology experiment. This project will open up the doors for my students and hopefully spark their interests in a career in scientific or medical research. In this project, students will swab their hands before washing them and after washing. They will then swab petri dishes of agar plate to see how much bacteria is present on your hands before washing them and how much bacteria is present after washing your hands. They will let the plates of bacteria incubate and then make observations of the results.
My Project
The materials for this project will allow for all 4 of my classes to be able to test 3 variables and have a control plate for each lab group. My students need enough agar medium to make 96 plates for growing bacteria for their experiment, inoculating loops, sterile swabs, and bacteria culture for the control. These materials will help them to collect bacteria, plate it and wait for it to grow. Then the students will see which plate grew more bacteria; a sample collected from unwashed hands, one from washed hands, and one from washed hands and one from someones hand after using hand sanitizer. One plate will be used for a control. The students will count the colonies of bacteria on each plate to see which is the best method for getting rid of bacteria on your hands. The students will write a lab report and collect their own data. They will follow the scientific method to answer the question; What is the best way to kill bacteria on our hands?
Please help me make this experience possible for my students.
I cannot purchase these materials without your help. Your gift will be greatly appreciated and hopefully inspire future scientists!
