My Students
I work with inner city special education students who have emotional disabilities. The biggest challenge I have is that they do not have the proper materials on any given day, most importantly a backpack where they can carry their books every day. Most of them use plastic bags which is embarrassing.
I work with inner city special education students who are affected by poverty.
My students come from single parent homes, foster homes or are homeless. Every day is a struggle for them just to get to school. Many of them suffer from mental health issues and are untreated due to the lack of resources in the area. Our high school is the second largest high school in Massachusetts. The majority of our students are minorities, and English is their second language. Many of our students' parents do not speak English and are trying their best to support their child.
My Project
My request is a bit different than the usual request. My students do not have money to buy backpacks and use plastic bags to bring their books back and forth. Many of our teachers spend their own money to buy backpacks for the kids, but unfortunately these backpacks break, or we have not been able to come up with enough money to get them for all of the students.
Our students want to be able to do their homework and read their books at home, and having dependable backpacks would make their life much easier to be able to do so.
Donations of backpacks will help our students further their education as they will now be able to transport their books back and forth, which is something they are unable to do at this time.
