Help me give my students the manipulatives they need to succeed at home without the use of the classroom environment in which they have been so successful in growing and learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn" -Ignacio Estrada. I apply this thought daily in my classroom. My students are faced with the challenge of being unique learners. As a special educator, I am tasked with using whatever will motivate them to learn especially during this unprecedented time of COVID.
My students are children with varying abilities and challenges, ranging from moderate speech & language needs, to health & mobility impairments, to autism.
My goal is to give my students as many opportunities to learn through play, communication and manipulatives. My students are in a Preschool Special Education class which serves ages 3-5, they attend an early intervention preschool program on a public school campus, in Southern Ca. Our district has provided us materials to use in the classroom but my goal is to be able to send home manipulatives during this time of COVID19, things my students are familiar with that will still expand their learning whether it be through play or tactile objects.
My Project
My students learn best when concepts are presented through a wide range of modalities, including: visual (seeing), auditory (hearing), kinesthetic (moving), and tactile (touching). When teaching very young learners of varying abilities, and challenges, the more senses or modalities we can activate, the more learning will take place. We are in need of materials that will help the students with their motor development and social emotional development as much as we can using materials at home. Our students need manipulative's that require them to use their muscles in their little fingers which helps develop their fine motor skills as well as work on their pre academic skills. My students desperately need materials they can use at home to continue their success with meeting IEP goals and furthering their knowledge not only through virtual learning but also using "hands on" materials at home. These materials will be of great use to my students to continue building on their skills as well as give them some type of familiarity and continuity.
