Backpacks for the Homeless, Veterans, and Domestic Abuse Shelters
We need shampoo, conditioner, snacks, razors, toilet paper, kleenex, disinfecting wipes, and non perishable items to fill backpacks for the homeless, veterans, and domestic abuse shelters.
My partner Liana and I, along with the Winfield-Mt. Union junior class, want to make a difference for people who don't have a lot. The holidays are coming really soon and we both know that the local Iowa homeless are in need of many things. Us and the junior class want to show these needy that we really care.
We want to put together bags (bookbags, duffel bags, purses) that include essentials like: toiletries, winter gloves, hat, scarves, socks, jackets, winter coats, sweatshirts, non-perishable food items, water, feminine products, redeemable gift cards (for warm food), and items such as shoes.
Donations, whether needed items or money, are how we'd need to run this project. We're hoping that the kindness in people's hearts can show by helping those who need our help the most. Any little thing can help! Whether it's an old t-shirt, a gift card you've never used, a check, or just some spare change. We'd appreciate anything people are willing to give!
With this project, students can learn to actively show their sympathy towards others, by giving with no reward for the sake of just helping someone out, and build organizational skills. Taking in large amounts of goods and talking to large amounts people can also strengthen socio-economic skills, which can aid students planning on going into business, social, white collar careers. Once students start seeing the impact and change that they are making in their community and in their state, they will be more determined to continue to help because they will realize that they are making a direct change to society.
In Their Own Words
Our class wants to show these struggling people that we have a lot to give, whether it's emotionally or materialistically. We want to bring out our empathetic and sympathetic personalities and display them for the good of others. Our most important goal with this project is to help people in need, and give them just a little something for the winter and holidays.
Our project isn't small. A large project like this requires courage and leadership. Taking charge to reach out and run something of this size needs a lot of teamwork. We can teach hands-on leadership skills by having people run the project, stand up to reach out to others, volunteer to hand out flyers at sporting events, go to different businesses and hand out flyers, and just keep promoting this project within the community.
This project is important to us and our community because we are reaching out to those in need within our community and coming together as a school and student body and making a change. This will help someone who does not have the essential items that they need to live day to day. The challenge that this project will solve is helping out someone who does not have it as good as we do and might need some extra help in life. We are hoping to this yearly and since this is our first year, we can already help 40 people but we would like to help more.
