I live in a community that surrounds my school. I see students at the grocery store, gas station and at the local lake. I love my community. It is rural and is classified as a Title I district. The majority of children from this and surrounding areas come from impoverished environments where parents have little opportunity and jobs are limited.
What I love about my students is that every year, I have the opportunity to teach them that they can look beyond their surroundings.
They can excel farther than they have imagined. And I get to help them imagine.
My Project
Title I district means low income communities surround the school. Many children are supported at school with free or reduced breakfast and lunch. As I began to find comfort in my teaching career, I started listening to my students and realizing some have little in the cabinets when they get home. Then I thought, what about the weekends!?
Our staff has rallied around these students and are paying for pantry type food that these kids can make on their own on the weekends.
Please help me to stock up for the beginning of next year so that these students do not have to wait. We not only send enough home for these kids, but for their siblings as well. Each kid (and their siblings) get a breakfast, a lunch and two snacks a day. It all adds up. Any help would be appreciated.
