This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a speech-language pathologist trying to provide students, the majority who have multiple disabilities and require intensive therapeutic supports, with materials that will promote a safe and enriching experience in speech/language therapy.
Many of my students are bilingual Spanish-English language learners from immigrant families.
As they enter school (some for the first time), I hope to encourage their bilingual development by providing them with books in both English and Spanish.
Therapy materials, including sequencing cards, language lotto, and early language activity cards, support my students' abilities tell stories, support reading/listening comprehension, and bolster their performance in the general education setting. Many of my preschool students do not have access to spoken language. Sign language cards will help to provide them with an additional communication modality to best support their unique needs. A board game (Candy Land) allows students to work together and have fun during group therapy. A fidget toy benefits students with autism and/or attention deficits who need extra stimulation to focus and reach their therapeutic goals. Finally, as our school fights to stave off infections of COVID-19, Clorox wipes are imperative for our students' and staff's safety.
