This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school library has a website with very short quizzes about our books. Kids read a book, take an online quiz about it, get points for passing the quiz... and, if they meet a monthly target based on their individual reading levels, they attend special celebrations.
The kids we're talking about attend a K-8 Center in South Florida.
We use the online quizzes for grades 2 through 5. That means we're talking about around 400 students. Many of our kids come from low-income families. Approximately 85% receive free or subsidized lunch. Most are first-generation Americans. Their parents work in local hotels and restaurants. Mom and dad tend not to take their kids to the local public library. Our school library is very important in these kids' educations.
My Project
This order will expand the number of online quizzes available to our kids. They will be able to choose from 80 NEW quizzes. The celebrations that the students attend when they meet their reading goals really inspire the kids to read more. (By way of example, our last celebration involved inviting a presenter from our local museum to put on a show for the kids about ancient Egypt, and then having the kids turn each other into mummies, with the help of dozens of rolls of toilet paper. They loved it!) And the quizzes will stay online permanently. They will motivate hundreds of library patrons for years to come.
And motivation is the name of the game!
We need to use every trick in the book to get the kids reading. This school year, we started taking more time and trouble to organize really fun celebrations for our successful quiz-takers. Guess what? Book circulation has doubled. We KNOW that this online system works with our youngsters. Please help us expand it!
