My Students

My first graders come from a low income neighborhood in the School District of Philadelphia. Each student receives free breakfast and lunch each day. They are an amazing group of kids who are full of energy and love to have fun! They are very caring, and love to help one another whenever possible.

Students in my room are on various academic levels with a wide range of abilities.

Some are starting to read independently while some are still working on letter identification and sounds. Even with the wide range of abilities, I have found that my students love to support one another throughout the academic day. They never tease or make any of the other students feel bad about what they are working on. Instead, they offer to help and teach one another which is so encouraging to me as their teacher. I love seeing them work together and grow each day!

My Project

These basic classroom materials will ensure that each and every one of my students receive the materials that they need to learn and grow as we return to the building this school year. In my low income school, many families do not have the resources necessary to make sure their students have all that they need to thrive at school. Many students do not have crayons or pencils at home, let alone to bring into the classroom. If we do have to return to virtual at some point during the school year, students will be able to take their pencil cases full of supplies home to use if needed.

Many of my first graders have yet to attend school in person, as many were fully virtual for their Kindergarten year.

As we return to the building, I know many students and parents are nervous, so I would like to make this transition as smooth as possible by providing many of the materials that students will need. Also, providing extra masks for those students that forget one or lose one during the school day is helpful. I also want to ensure we have Lysol wipes available to wipe down desks and doorknobs throughout the day. All of the materials requested will be used on a daily basis.
