My Students

My students come from culturally diverse backgrounds and all walks of life. Some have recently immigrated in search of a better life and are still struggling to learn English. Many of my students experience poverty and trauma that is too heavy for their thirteen year old selves. No matter what they are facing, they show up.

Covid has been hard on all students, but has been especially difficult for students who lacked the resources or support to be successful online.

The transition back to in-person learning has been tough. My students have struggled with academics and social emotional skills this year more than ever before.

My kids inspire me every single day and give me hope for what the future will look like. They are brave, resilient, adaptable, accepting, passionate, and kind. Teaching teenagers can be hard, but there is nowhere I would rather be than with these kids.

My Project

Some of my students have not set foot into a classroom for over a year. Others, who remained in school have had inconsistent learning experiences with going back and forth between distance learning and face to face instruction.

My students are struggling with the skills they need to be successful in school like organization, coming to class prepared, and literacy skills.

I am asking for basic supplies like pencils and binders to help my students come to class prepared and ready to learn. I am also asking for incentives to give my students in order to help motivate them in my class. We do weekly prizes for positive classroom behaviors as well as individual incentives for work completion.

Literacy is so important. Most of my students have low literacy skills and need help finding books that they can connect with. I am a believer that every child is a reader, some just haven't found the right book. Providing my students with a diverse library will help them find joy in reading.
