My Students

The challenge to provide my students basic supplies stands in the way of my ability to effectively teach. I consistently pick activities based on the amount of copies needed. When a student gets up to blow their nose, I'm momentarily distracted by the thought of the last two boxes left on the shelf.

I have 22 imaginative, social, successful students.

Most of my students face a daily struggle for their most basic needs. Despite the things they face at home, they show up every day with a smile on their face. They are eager to learn and soak up every piece of information given. My students may only be 7 and 8 but they are strong and wise beyond their years. Our school is a Title 1 school and has been fighting to close the achievement gap for many years. We have made leaps and bounds towards improvement through changing the culture of the school. Teachers teach using best practices based on data and administrators provide support through a teared system, including coaching for teachers and leveled support for students. We are a school and class dedicated to change! One thing we can't change are the dwindling supplies at our school. We always make it work and find solutions but there aren't many healthy solutions for a replacement for tissues.

My Project

My students will be blessed with a teacher that doesn't hold her breath each time someone reaches for a tissue. They won't have to wipe their nose on their sleeves or go all the way to the bathroom (which is all far from the portable) for rough towels. Rough towels that turn their noses red and require them to miss instructional time to retrieve. I will also be able to make plans based on the achievable growth and connection to content, not on the amount of copies that would be needed. This is important, since our school has already gone through 70% of the yearly supply. In a nutshell, these resources will enable me to focus on teaching and what is best for my students and take the worry away for next week and the rest of the school year. As a teacher, it would just be one less thing to worry about on a daily basis. My students need 4 boxes of copy paper and many, many boxes of tissues.

Coming from a Title 1 community, my students are acutely aware of how much they do and do not have.

Myself and my bank account are extremely aware! The worry of having enough will no longer be a factor in the lessons I can present. We will also be able to protect each other against germs by blowing our noses and I won't have to worry about running out. Therefore, reducing the risk of absenteeism and giving them more time in the classroom to work to close the achievement gap.
