My Students

I work with inner-city preschool students who attend a school with a 98% poverty rate. My students are bursting with energy and excitement for learning new things. Most of my students live within walking distance of the school in a neighborhood facing issues that consist of drugs, prostitution, and homelessness. Many of my students are exposed to countless challenges at a very young age. Our school is constantly dealing with issues related to low attendance rates and absent parents. Despite their daily challenges, I am looking to provide my students with a safe place that is rich, loving, and filled with meaningful learning experiences. My students are in need of materials that will positively influence their love of learning. My students make a huge impact on my life and I would like to do the same for them by giving them opportunities, materials, and experiences that will last a lifetime!

My Project

Every day my students are working on learning their letters and numbers. More importantly, they are learning about themselves by learning to write their names, ages as well as information about their families and their favorite things. We are constantly using dry erase markers with our writing activities, such as name practice and tracing letters. My students are so much more engaged in the morning work when it can incorporate markers, specifically dry erase markers. Many of the letters we trace are pages that have been laminated for each student. The laminating pouches definitely come in handy when creating new activities for the children to do whether they are a dry erase activity, a new activity for the pocket chart or even an engaging matching game for the magnetic board. We have also started to use highlighters a lot more. We are going on scavenger hunts trying to find certain letters throughout our work. An even more engaging activity is watching our (highlighter) letters “glow” using black light flashlights. Finally, we are able to label many things throughout our classroom using masking tape. When teaching 3, 4 and 5 year olds how to properly use and care for our materials, we tend to go through certain materials a lot quicker than older children would which means we are constantly needing new supplies.
