Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are curious, energetic, and kind individuals who attend a neighborhood public school in Chicago. A large portion of my students are first-generation Americans whose families hail from all parts of Latin America, including México, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, to name a few. Their rich culture is celebrated in the classroom where many students receive academic instruction in Spanish through the school's preK-8th Dual Language Program.
By nurturing their biliteracy and bilingualism, my students demonstrate that they value their heritage; they take pride in their identity and take ownership of their many abilities.
In a city where the common narrative is that minorities are "underprivileged" or "at-risk," these resilient young people boldly flip the script and show the power that comes from embracing who they are and where they come from. Their educational journey is a truly remarkable one.
My Project
As I begin my second year of teaching middle school science and health, these are some materials that I know my students will need, use, and enjoy for their learning experience in my classroom this year.
My students deserve a space that is safe, clean, and equipped with lab, craft, and basic classroom necessities.
With your help, my students can observe cool, high-quality slides from our microscopes, engage in fun hands-on activities such as creating ecosystem food webs with the paper bags + string, perform exothermic and endothermic chemical reactions using the hot plate and digital balance, and also practice lab safety with our latex-free gloves. Moreover, because this year we're switching from lab notebooks to science binders, my students will benefit from the paper cutter and the 3-hole puncher to help keep their lab work organized.
The first aid kit, tissue paper, disinfecting wipes and glade refills will also contribute in creating an orderly room that promotes peace and productivity.
Thank you in advance for your time, consideration and generosity-- all 110 students and I truly appreciate it!
