This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a large urban area where the majority of my students are part of the free lunch program and come from low socio-economic home environments. Having money for food and other household expenses takes priority over buying learning games, books, or technology. This is my Kindergarten students' first school experience. I want them to develop a love for reading and learning, and depending on the pandemic, I may be teaching in person or virtually.
Due to the pandemic, many of my students did not attend pre-school or did so virtually, so I need many resources to help them in reading and writing that will be engaging.
Every year, my Kindergarten students always come excited to class, and this year they may be more apprehensive. I want them to feel safe and have a positive mindset to begin learning the love of reading and writing.
My Project
This school year, I want to give my students the supplies they deserve after having been home due to the pandemic. Many of my new Kindergarten students did not attend pre-school due to the pandemic, or if they did, they had limited supplies. Many will have a lot to say, and it's easier for little ones to draw their feelings and emotions.
I want my students to feel safe in drawing what they feel in their journals and have crayons to color them.
After such a hard year away from school, I want them to not be limited in supplies. They usually get 8 crayons twice a year. I want them to be able to have access to more crayons since the world doesn't just consist of 8 colors. Having the twistable crayons will last them a long time as well.
I plan on doing lessons and reading stories that deal with various social-emotional themes since many will be coming to school with stories to tell.
