Back to School We're Running, With Supplies We'll Be Stunning!
My students need basic classroom supplies, such as a reliable, working printer, markers, paper, and highlighters so their focus can be on learning, and not reorganizing, each time they transition from classroom to classroom.
My students are a diverse group; they come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, with a wide range of academic ability. Middle school students are a fascinating group- some are still very childlike, and others think they are mini-adults!
Generally, middle school students share several characteristics: they need to feel part of a group, and prefer active over passive learning activities that involve working with their peers.
They are capable of more abstract thinking, and are able to process multiple thoughts and ideas. They never want to feel different, or in any way out of place.
They have a variety of learning styles and needs, but they do have one thing in common - they need support and assistance with organization as they transition from one classroom and teacher to the next.
My Project
My middle school students do not have lockers, and they need to carry their belongings with them from class to class. Frequently, they are so overwhelmed, they don't always have the items they need. This causes many of them stress, because they are great kids who don't like to make mistakes- but all too often, mistakes do happen. By providing them with basic classroom essentials, such as folders, paper clips, staples and tape, they will know that our classroom is a safe space where their focus is on learning.
By having needed materials all in one place for my students, it will make organization for my students automatic.
I can't even remember how many times I've heard, "Can I go back to the math room? I think I left my pen/folder/highlighter there". I want my students to know that our classroom is a safe space, where they can count on having whatever they need so their focus is on learning and nothing else.
Research shows that middle school differs from elementary school in many ways - one of the most important, but underestimated, is the increased pressure it puts on kids' organizational abilities. I want to remove this pressure from my students. If they were not able to print out an assignment, I want them to know we have a printer they can use. We have toner, and paper, and staples for them to put their work together. Am I really concerned if a kid forgot a pen, or a ruler, or his colored pencils? No, I'm not! I AM concerned, however, on their focus on their learning. By providing them with the tools they need, I can help them improve the quality of their work, while at the same time reducing the time it takes to complete it.
