Back To School Survival

My students need school supplies to last throughout the school year. My first graders need pencils, paper, crayons and glue. These are all the basics you see on a school supply list.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the school supply list you used to get as a kid? Then you went to the store and bought your pencils, scissors, and glue. It was an exciting time for many. My students do not have a school list distributed. We ask for donations from parents. We don't get many of these donations.

My students come from a low-economic gang infested neighbor hood in the central part of our city.

We have 98% free lunch program at our school. Most of my students are Hispanic and come from Spanish speaking homes. My parents are Spanish speakers with limited their means in our community. As a teacher I buy most of my school supplies for my students each year. Our school requests a donation from parents during enrollment. Then as a school we purchase the basics to survive throughout the year. We wear uniforms to school to reduce gang logos and affiliation. Therefore parents will spend money on uniforms versus supplies needed in the classroom. We send notes home in Spanish requesting wish lists of things needed, in which not many of those wish lists are granted.

My Project

If you donate to my classroom, we can possibly have school supplies on the first day of school. Oftentimes I am limited on my lessons due to the fact that I am waiting on supplies, or I have to go and purchase 25 of what I need on my own. I do know my students that I teach appreciate the things they do get on the first day because they lack many basic needs at their own home. Therefore they are truly grateful for a brand new box of crayons. They need the basics for school such as crayons, glue, scissors, and paper. As a teacher I need dry erase markers and boards to help with the lessons. My first graders go through many of these things quickly. I usually try to replenish these items after Christmas break. Any contribution would be appreciated.

Your donation would help impact my students' learning by giving them the tools needed daily.

Most of my students will not have these essentials. All of these supplies are used in the class daily. There is never a day that something would not be used. We would appreciate your help making my first graders survive our back to school challenges.
