My Students

I am a reading teacher at a K-8 center in Miami. I teach middle school reading to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who are struggling with reading. My school is a Title I school which means that about 90% of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. The school is in a high poverty neighborhood so many of my students come from families who struggle financially. As a result, my students endure more problems than average children, and these problems interfere with and hinder their learning.

Being the middle school reading teacher, I am responsible for helping my students improve their reading skills in all subject areas so they can be successful lifelong learners.

I know that my job is extremely important in helping them be successful in life. Therefore, I am always searching and seeking new reading strategies and resources to improve their reading and keep them motivated and engaged.

My students just need someone to believe in them and give them the tools to be successful. As Joseph Addison says, "Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life."

My Project

My students need basic school supplies to help them achieve success in reading at school and home. Many of our students lost their items and some even lost their homes after Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria school last year. In addition, there are a great number of students that are living in the homeless shelters near the school due to financial problems from the hurricanes and/or their family situations. I have been teaching at this school for the past 3 years and found that most of them cannot afford to buy school supplies and the ones in homeless shelters cannot even buy basic needs such school uniforms, shoes, and even food.

Starting a new school year, I want my students not to worry about buying school supplies that they will need to help them learn and do their assignments both in school and at home.

By not thinking about how they are going to purchase the school supplies will help them feel a little normal and forget some of their daily problems. I plan to provide them with supplies to use in school and make bags with pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, markers, highlighters, folders, copy paper, and chart paper the essentials that they will need to do their work at home. The students will need to do their work. We will be working on interacting with the text, creating literacy projects, writing essays, and responding to comprehension questions. Please help my students by contributing to the project so they can get their school supplies for the new school year so they can be successful and forget their problems while they are at school.
