My Students
Welcoming a new class is always exciting and this year, although it will be very different, is the same. P.S. 361Q is a Title One school with a diverse population of students. As they prepare for the new school year, some of the students will be learning remotely and some will be in the classroom for part of the week. This all has been a very difficult transition for them and their families.
The fourth graders are coming back to a different atmosphere than what they are used to.
My Project
Our fourth graders are coming back to school with many uncertainties. Many things they are used to in our school will be different. It is our goal as teachers to make this transition from remote learning to being back in a classroom, as easy and safe as possible.
What once was an environment of sharing and collaboration, now has to be one of safety and comfort.
The materials I am requesting will help our grade ease back into the classroom.
Our school believes in building a social-emotional community. Each of our classrooms had a peace corner where students can go to take a mental break if they were having a bad day. It was shared by all in the class. Now, we want create individual, personal, safe, "peace corner" tools that each student will have when they are struggling and need a little break. They will also have their own personal journals to reflect on how they are feeling while adjusting to this new way of learning.
Another idea we had was to create personal baggies to house school supplies for each student instead of sharing materials. These can be used in class and/or at home. As they work at their desks which will be socially distanced, they will also have shields that will add an extra layer of protection. It's a new way of planning back to school materials and these materials can be a big help for our students.
