My high school students are interested in multiple topics and come from multiple backgrounds. They attend the Culinary and Magnet programs or are neighborhood kids in the east side of town.
They are driven, curious about high school activities and academics.
They seek to enhance their skills by participating in advanced classes, even though they understand these to be challenging.
When schedules don't allow for registration in the elective classes they seek, they turn to lunch or after-school clubs to meet those goals and participate in diverse activities that fit their needs. Programming, robotics, experimental science and other STEAM subjects are of particular interest.
My library makerspace has plenty of resources and students are utilizing them regularly, but not fully because I find myself without guidance to develop activities that really push the students' imagination.
Going back to Indiana University, my Alma Mater, to participate in a makerspaces bootcamp is the perfect training opportunity to increase the quality of my teaching.
I am hoping to return to my school after the training with ideas, activities and lesson plans from the Infosys Foundation Pathfinders Summer Institute that I can put to immediate use.
My students will benefit from expanded opportunities in STEM and they'll take full advantage of all of our existing resources and fresh ideas. Our high school students don't get enough opportunities for hands-on activities, so I want to make sure what I have to offer is challenging and educational.
