Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are the forgotten, the ignored, the unfortunate. The school has no library, so the teachers must supply them with books as the neighborhood library is too dangerous to get to on any given day. They come from a neighborhood in Chicago where guns are more common than books; however, they have dreams, big dreams.
They dream of college and careers. They dream of briefcases and polished shoes. They dream of a savings account and success. My students can be successful, but they have not reached their full potential and won't without a basic necessity: books.
My Project
These books will impact my students daily as they get to choose a book each day to read silently at their desks. No tests, no quizzes, no homework revolving around it. The reading is to re-introduce my students to the love of reading, something many of them lose during their educational journey. In order to inspire this, I have to have books that they want to read and can see themselves in.
Once they have found that one book, that is where the magic begins. They then look forward to reading more and more and want to read everything they can.
