Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever had to move to a new place where you couldn’t speak the language, much less read or write it? Well, many of my students have and despite this, they are still expected to be “proficient” learners of our state standards and perform accordingly on high stakes assessments. I work in a small school with a very high underserved immigrant population just a short few miles from Miami International Airport.
Our students need basic school supplies such as binders, divider tabs, post-it notes, highlighters, and prong folders to complete daily activities in reading, writing, and math. With over 90% of our school population on free and reduced-price lunch and living below the poverty line, many of our students are unable to bring school supplies for back to school season in August.
So, to make sure all our students start the year prepared, I would like to provide them with these basic school supplies.
My Project
The students at our school come from low-income households that cannot always afford the materials needed to learn at school. All of our students have a desire to learn and work extremely hard to excel in school.
These resources will be used every day by our students.
The 1-inch binders and divider tabs will be used for the upper elementary writing program and the Kindergarten-5th grade (K-5) reading intervention program. Students in upper elementary (grades 4-5) engage in daily writing activities that will prepare them for the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) and beyond. Students are learning to formulate their own opinions about the world and the writing binder helps them to keep all their writing organized. In doing so, teachers can provide students with feedback and students can be reflective and grow as writers. Finally, 1-inch binders and divider tabs will also be used for students in grades (K-5) to organize their McGraw Hill Wonderworks Intervention materials. With a binder and divider tabs, students will be able to store and organize a copy of the weekly book and daily reading activities at their reading level. Folders, binders, and divider tabs I am requesting will help students at our school to learn organizational skills and responsibility. These items are everyday materials that our students would greatly benefit from.
