I'm a second grade Special Education teacher at PS 181 in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school, and approximately 84% of its students receive free lunch. Throughout the school year, I encourage my students to explore their creative sides through various art projects and activities. For example, my students have painted ocean murals, created 3-dimensional models of insects, and even created costumes for a class play, all using basic art supplies: glue, construction paper, clay, markers, and crayons. Due to the limited funding for the arts available in my school district, availability of such supplies is limited. Despite my attempts to ration class art materials, I often run out of glue, clay, and construction paper well before the end of the year. Through years of heavy use, my marker, crayon, and scissor supplies need to be replaced in order to maintain the level of artistic exploration desired. As a Special Education teacher, one of my main objectives is to make the curriculum fully accessible to all types of learners. My visual and hands-on learners will benefit from these art materials, as they can continue to express their ideas in non-written formats. Access to these basic art materials will also help to provide my students with a balanced curriculum, complete with art education. I strive to incorporate art into my curriculum as much as possible. A class set of glue, scissors, clay, crayons, markers, and construction paper would be a wonderful way to make this goal possible for my students. The cost of 30 Crayola Washable No-Run School Glue, 30 blunt tip scissors, a class-pack of Model Magic clay, a class-pack of Washable Markers, a class-pack of large-sized crayons, and a class-pack of large sized construction paper is $393.76.
