Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are full of energy and curiosity. Most just started their schooling last September, and now they are not able to continue with their regular routines. They are missing out on daily physical, social and emotional interactions with their friends and teachers because of schools being closed. Many of my students' families face additional challenges at home, such as living with extended families, renting a room within a home or not having permanent housing. Now, they are asked to stay at home, stay indoors, and do distance learning.

My kindergarteners are resilient, but they have shared some of their ups and downs that they are experiencing at home.

Parents have shared that their children often lack motivation to do distance learning, help at home or even engage with others at home. They often do not have the emotional support, skills, the right words or tools to express how they are feeling and dealing with their strong emotions during this difficult time.

My Project

My students will be entering kindergarten in the fall; most likely we will start with a modified schedule and eventually we will be back to the regular schedule. Regardless of what the model will look like in the fall, I will not be doing community supplies for safety reasons. I teach two kindergarten classes and each student will need to have supplies at home and at school for a combination of distance learning and learning in person.

With the project, each student will have a pencil box, pencils, and sheet protectors to stay focused on learning and safety for everyone.

These basic supplies will not be shared with each other and will help everyone stay safe. The pencil box will help students learn how to take care of own materials, stay organized and access materials at home. The folders with fasteners with sheet protectors will help students have copies of the writing and writing class charts, the alphabet in Spanish and English and much more to use at home. Students will be able to organize their finished work on one side of the folders and the unfinished work on the other side. This will prevent their work and materials from mixing up and will keep everyone learning and safe.
