Help me give my students back-to-school kits that include basic school supplies and snacks! Each student will receive a pencil box filled with basic school necessities and some healthy treats for when the days get rough.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year I am continuing to teach 3rd grade. My students for this upcoming year are Second Language Learners and have been greatly affected by distance learning. Many of my students rely on school for not just their education but their food and supplies. With the school campuses being closed, many students have not had pencils, crayons, or even paper to draw on, let alone do their classwork. Some of them have not been able to even go outside to play as the neighborhood is not safe to do so. I know that by the end of last year, many of my families confided in me about their financial situations and I want to be able to relieve some of the stress of back-to-school supply shopping.
While my students were fortunate enough to receive technology from our school, some of them are missing basic supplies that I believe all kids need.
I want to create a Back-to-School package for them that includes basic school supplies and snacks that will help them be motivated to participate in online learning.
My Project
Due to recent circumstances around COVID-19, my district has decided to start the year with distance learning. This means that instead of waking up excited to meet their new teacher and see their new classroom, my students will be staying home and staring at a computer screen. For this reason, I want to bring the feeling of the first day of school to my students by sending home care packages to them. These care packages will include a pencil box full of school essentials ranging from pencils to crayons and more. They will also be receiving a whiteboard so they can participate during the video classes and work on problems as a class (while being at home). Lastly, this project includes snacks for my students. Many of my students rely on school to get two meals a day, and for the students who don't bring a lunch, I try to keep my classroom stocked with snacks so they don't have to go hungry all day. By sending home a few snacks, I can ensure that my students are prepared to learn without worrying about whether or not they have eaten that day.
My goal is to bring the sense of excitement that normally surrounds a new school year to the doorstep of my students.
These students are already dealing with parents who are either essential workers, or are unable to work. By supplying the students with the basic school supplies, parents won't need to worry about buying pencils or dinner for their family. This project will also eliminate the comparison between the students who can afford new supplies each year, and the students who reuse materials or don't have any to begin with.
