My Project
The amazing scholars at our GSA charter school, a school where sustainability and environmental impact awareness are part of our mission, are resilient and strong with a desire to learn and grow. The materials and resources afforded them in Baltimore City is so disparate and simple materials like books that you expect in every classroom are not abundantly available at our charter school. After teaching in a more affluent district in Maryland, I am on a mission to secure equity in resources for all students but particularly my students with disabilities in 9th-12th grade with this project. My students with disabilities deserve the same resources that are available to more affluent school districts in Maryland and they deserve more!
In my classroom, my students need the basic supplies to be successful in writing and reading.
Composition notebooks with Cornell note-taking templates, quad ruled for keeping each letter properly spaced for those learners with fine motor difficulties, room for drawing will help support retention of class material. The tabletop shelf will provide a safe place to store their books, allowing us to develop routine and consistency each day, which my students with disabilities need.
By providing the notebooks and supports of personal dictionaries to improve literacy across content areas, students, with years of frustration with a disability impacting their learning, feel safe, responsible and loved enough to be the very best they can be in their learning. This leads to empowerment and productivity that translates to more educational progress and confidence to reach for the stars.
