Back to School Already?! Supplies Make It Easier for ELL's!
My students need paper, pens, note cards, markers, composition notebooks, clip boards, and Post-It notes to help make the transition to a new country and new school much easier for them.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Middle school students are a different breed! They are bright, funny, inspiring, emotional, intense, energetic, and extremely talented. In the midst of discovering who they will become as they continue to grow, they are learning and developing new skills and talents. As their teacher, it is my job to love, support and encourage them as they navigate through this crazy world called "Middle School."
My students are an amazing group of kids from all over the world - literally!
As an ESOL teacher, I work with students whose second language is English. Many come to me shy, a little scared and nervous, yet eager to learn. At times, they speak little to no English and are placed into classrooms where only English is spoken. Imagine how difficult that would be!
Even with these challenges, they are strong young men and women who realize the value and importance of a strong education. They work harder, study longer, and push themselves to be the best they can be. As hard as middle school already is for kids this age, my students embrace it. They celebrate their differences and the success of one another. They are an inspiration to me!
My Project
Supplies may seem like a simple request, but for my ELL students, it can make all the difference in the world! My students, many times, come to school with no supplies or the wrong supplies. Often, this is simply because of the language barrier. They just may not understand or even know what they need for each class.
Having the supplies they need for class gives my ELL students confidence and helps them be prepared for any assignment or project.
It is such a relief to my students to know that they can come to me for notebook paper, or pens, or even a composition notebook. Knowing that I am there to support them in the most simple way makes their transition to a new country and a new school just a little easier.
For this project, paper, pens, note cards, markers, composition notebooks, clip boards, and Post-It notes will help my students be prepared for almost any class. I have discovered, over the years, that Post-It notes are a great way for students to make notes in their textbooks without ruining them. They are able to jot down words they don't understand or important information quickly and can bring it to me so that we can learn more about a topic or vocabulary word together. The sponges will be used as erasers when the kids use their individual whiteboards and the clipboards and bean bag chairs allow them to move about the room and be comfortable while they work.
Again, supplies may seem like a simple request, but it can make all the difference in the world for an ELL student who has no way of understanding what they need and why they need it. By donating to this project, you are giving an immigrant student peace of mind.
