I teach middle level students who are learning English as a new language. The majority come from the Philippines and the island nations of Micronesia. They need language support to be successful in their regular classes, as well as navigating their new environment.
I believe that language learners learn best through peer collaboration with hands-on, visual learning opportunities.
I aim to provide students a lot of opportunities to interact with the core content they are learning. I also strongly believe in arts-integration as a powerful tool for learning.
My Project
Hawaii schools head back to in-person learning next week! Many of my students were at home last year due to the COVID pandemic, and coming back to school may be scary or traumatic for some. To help us ease back in, I would love to offer a round table as a seating option. Round tables create a better flow to a space and help it feel not so institutional. My room is also small and round tables work well in small spaces.
As a language teacher, literacy is a huge part of my curriculum.
By offering more book choices, students will be excited to read, listen, speak, and write. I chose a variety of books from many different cultures to pique their interest, increase engagement, and offer windows and mirrors for my students of color.
The paints will help us create projects to tie into the books, and the bins will help us store the books and keep supplies separated.
