This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a small, cozy neighborhood elementary school in Virginia. The children in my building are lively and great kids. They appreciate and evolve from positive, but firm motivation and are very bright when focused and interested. We were named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2006. Our school was renamed (from J.E.B. Stuart) in June of 2018.
I love teaching grades Pre-K through First, because kids at these stages are so enthusiastic and happy to learn!
I feed off of their enthusiasm and it makes me want to provide them with even more innovative learning experiences!
My Project
My students and I have been at home quarantining and remote working since March 2020. We go back to in-person school on September 8 and I will admit, I am very wary and feeling uncomfortable.
I always knew that this day would come; I really am excited to teach in person, but I am trying to prepare myself physically and mentally to return.
I admit that I am having a time reconciling with the thought.
I ALSO have to prepare to reacclimate my students to in-person attendance. Kids follow the lead of their teacher; when a teacher is calm, they are calm. Though the world has "reopened", COVID-19 and its variants are still rampant and I want to maintain a peaceful but hygiene-oriented space for my class.
As most of my dedicated donors know, I teach in a former storage room in the basement of my school.
While it has windows, the space is small and it is impossible to space 3 feet apart, much less 6 feet apart with 18-20 children.
Not only that, we will be sequestered in the same room together basically all day--eating breakfast and lunch, having all extracurricular classes, and et cetera in the same room.
It gives me anxiety just thinking about it!
I am asking for a plethora of disinfectant wipes, sprays, and floor cleaning systems to keep my classroom as germ-free as possible. We will use the sprays on computer keyboards and mice; the wipes before and after breakfast and lunch; the kids won’t be using the items for a lesson but to keep the environment in which they learn germ-free.
I hope to ease everyone's anxiety about returning to in-person teaching if I have the proper items to keep my space germ-free.
