My Students

Kindergarten lays the solid foundation necessary for successful learning in other grades. My 17 kindergarten students yearn to learn!

Aloha from the beautiful state of Hawaii where we seek to empower our students through education!

Our school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children being of native Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry. With the financial challenges impacting their lives, my students do not always come to school with readiness skills. More importantly, my students have diverse learning styles. Although they may not have the materials needed or a foundation of early learning experiences, they do possess a strong desire to learn!

My Project

Sitting and listening to the teacher talk is not the most effective way kindergarten students learn. They need to be able to explore math concepts and strategies like numbers, operations, place value, and geometry through hands-on activities. Through exploration, kindergarten students can discover the strategies that work best for their individual learning style. These tools are basic necessities of learning math.

More importantly, the toolboxes being requested will be fundamental for my students as they engage in our school-wide powerful instructional practice of discourse in math.

As they explore these math tools, my students will be able to discuss how they solved problems and teach each other different ways to solve each problem. Integrating hands-on activities with discourse during math will positively increase their engagement during whole-group and small-group instruction. Be the catalyst to help my students get back to basics with materials in these toolboxes!
