Our elementary school is a diverse school in an urban community that serves students from many backgrounds. Each child brings with him or her unique strengths and needs. They are inquisitive and enthusiastic, and come to school ready to learn every day!
As students come back to the classroom full-time after over a year and a half away, it is more important than ever to meet students where they are and to provide them with the tools they need to be successful.
My students pushed themselves during remote learning, and many came back to hybrid schooling ready to go. Now that we are entering a more "normal" school year, we will work more than ever on independent and small group work as well as executive functioning skills.
My Project
An important part of the structure of our school day is independent and small group practice time. During these times, students are working on math, writing, and reading either independently or in small groups with teacher guidance.
Having the tools students need - and plenty of them - at the ready means that students can take ownership of shared materials and maximize learning time.
For example, during writing workshop, students use Flair pens to write their pieces, and staplers and tape to add pages into booklets or revise their writing. Rather than sharing a single stapler or tape dispenser, having several of these items available around the classroom will help students make revisions more independently. Dry erase pockets and Expo markers will provide students with tools they need to work on math facts or to play games with a partner, and Post-It chart paper puts anchor charts and necessary reference tools at students' fingertips.
With these basic items, students will have the tools they need to be successful.
