Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a group of diverse middle school science 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. We are at a Title I school. Most of my students come from a low socioeconomic background. I strive to have my classroom accessible and equitable, but that becomes a challenge when resources are limited.
My students are current and future scientists who are excited to learn about the world around them through curiosity, observation, data collection, and application.
My students are all eager to learn and make self-discoveries in science. They come to school knowing that it's a safe place where they can create meaningful connections with their peers and teachers. They come with little to no background knowledge of the science content, but they are willing and strive to soak up all the knowledge that is presented to them. My students are wonderful young men and women who are ready to take on the world.
My Project
We are fortunate enough to be able to use a research-based science curriculum called FOSS. The goal of FOSS is for science to be accessible and equitable for students through scientific literacy, instructional efficiency, and systemic reform. To do this, FOSS has students keep a composition/interactive notebook.
Students take pride in creating and maintaining their interactive notebooks because it it something that they have put time and effort into.
Most of the handouts on FOSS are printed two sheets to a page. Because of this, the paper trimmer will help expedite cutting the papers in half. The glue sticks allow students to glue their handouts or foldables in their interactive notebook so that they don't lose important information and resources. The highlighters allows students to become well versed in scientific literacy if they are able to annotate and highlight key points from readings. At times, students will complete foldables for their interactive notebook and will need scissors to cut out certain templates. Markers will help students complete assignments that require color.
