Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Tanzania, China, Honduras, Thailand, Uganda, Mexico, Haiti, Vietnam, El Salvador, and Guatemala — these are some of the cultures represented in my classroom. My classes are comprised of students brand new to the United States. For many of them, school was a privilege and not a right. Some students have spent their entire lives in refugee camps and have vivid memories of the sparse provisions. For other students, the threat of violence in getting to school was too great a risk. Far too many of them have endured hardships no one should ever have to experience.
My Project
I work with Year 1 Newcomers from all over the world. While some students just need language acquisition, others have had gaps in their education and require additional support in all content areas. My class helps fill in some of those holes.
This year students will maintain a portfolio of their work that serves as both a representation of what they learned during the year, as well as act as a memory book.
I am requesting items to help students organize that portfolio and help them create a quality product that they can be proud of. After a year and a half of working almost exclusively with digital content, I want students to hone their fine motor skills by writing, coloring, or annotating directly on paper. Markers and colored pencils will be used for art work that accompanies a poem or other text or for map work for geography and history. The colored ink will allow me to print out items for their presentation such as flags, images, and photos. I had some success last year with daily writing responses using photos and images, and I noticed a difference in the quality and detail of their writing when they had individual copies right in front of them.
All of their work will be collected and organized during the school year and will culminate in a presentation at the end. These materials will help them add fine details and add a decorative flair to their work. My goal is for them to leave with a tangible portfolio that showcases their skills and efforts.
