My Students

We are 4th graders who reside in a suburb of New York. Our classroom is comprised of two English Language Arts ICT classes, taught in a departmentalized model. The 60 diverse children include general education children and children with disabilities. In addition to being made up of 40% students with special needs, both classes have students who are extremely bright and need to be academically challenged. Although our students come from different backgrounds, they all have something in common: they are excited, eager to learn, and love to participate in class discussions and activities. It is our challenge to keep them engaged and learning.

My Project

This is my fifth year teaching students in a whole different way. Working in an Integrated Special Teaching Program means that I work with students on all areas of the educational, emotional, and physical spectrum. My students are from diverse backgrounds, and my goal is that they have access to projects and activities that support their different needs. From students with autism, to others who have rare diseases, these student all have the same goal......to learn and be successful.

I often have to modify my lesson or project so that all students can participate and it would be helpful to have additional classroom basic materials.

We are always in need of paper and pencils. However, some students must use computers or iPads as their writing tool for dexterity purpose, and so ink for our printers goes very quickly. I hope that my students learn that being different is their strength, not their weakness!
